My Month in Scrappy? Sew Bee It!

Since May I have been in a virtual quilting bee on flickr, the Scrappy? Sew Bee It!
Every month we make blocks for a different member and take all our fabric from our stash, with the focus on using up scraps.

But I know that some members (including myself) have purchased fabric to make the blocks as good as possible. It is a great challenge to make a different block every month. You have to be more careful and precise than usual (at least, I have to be...). We did several very different ones until today: stars, feathers, a giant hexagon, x and +, 36 patch and very differnt log cabins.

January is my month. When we could choose our month I thought naively I'd have enough time during the holidays to plan my block and write a detailed and well-edited tutorial... well not quite. I drafted a pattern, made a practice block and took some shabby indoor-evening-telephone-pictures of it because I can't find the loading device for my camera and  I'm never home in sunshine...

I'd like to do a Scrappy Spider Web. I've seen several of them in blogland and I've been collecting scraps and selvadges since I started quilting for such a project. I'd love to get as many colourful scraps and selvadges as possiple with medium grey "stars" in the centre. I'll post my templates and directions in our flickr group.

Colour choices...

I've been working on this quilt since january. While I was studying in January/Febuary/March I designed, cut and pieced the quilt top in little breaks in-between. I studied for 20 minutes with a timer, sewed for 20 minutes, studied again... This way I could really concentrate on my reading because I knew in 20 minutes I'd be allowed to do something different again.

Then the top and back were stored away because I wasn't sure how to quilt them, and then we moved, I started something else and... You know what its like. Recently I thought a lot about a quilt design and yesterday afternoon I just started basting and quilting. Well... after some stitches (nearly a bobbin!) I noticed that I didn't like the design nor my performance of it. I set down in front of the TV and ripped it out. Then suddenly the inspiration hit me and I decided to just quilt circles, a little bit off-centred. And I just sat down and did it. Its absolutely not perfect, let's call it intentionally organic and wavy, ok?

And only 5 hous after I started basting I had a finished quilt, including time for dinner and seam ripping. And then I was stuck. I can't decide which binding to choose.

 The original plan was to use the light green one. It would fit great in our living room or the tiny library corner. But I think its a bit boring. I bought the stripes for another project, but I think they would look good here as well. And last (but not least) I have a beautiful red. I think it sets of the other colours nicely and ties them together.
But is it to bold? What do you think?

Neptun Zick Zack Quilt

Heute will ich meinen Neptun Zick Zack Quillt vorstellen den ich im Dezember 11/Januar 12 genäht habe. Die Stoffe hatte ich allerdings schon einige Zeit lang gesammelt.

Today I want to show you my Neptun Zick Zack Quilt. I started it before Christmas 11 and finished it surprisingly fast in January. I had been hoarding the fabric for some time.


The fabric is Neptune by Tula Pink and Kona Cotton in Seafoam. Because I didn't have enough seafom I used some of the lighter Neptune fabric in its place and I like it even more, it makes the design more interesting.
I quilted it (not always perfect) with a variegated Gütermann Sulky thread only on the lighter parts, approximately 1/4 inch from the seams.

Der Stoff ist Neptune von Tula Pink und Kona Cotton in Seafoam. Da ich nicht genug Seafoam hatte habe ich etwas von dem hellen Neptune Stoff genommen, was das ganze aber auch interessanter macht. Gequilted habe ich das ganze etwas dilettantisch ca 1/4 inch von der Naht entfernt nur in den hellen Teilen, mit einem blauen Farbverlaufsgarn von Gütermann.

Und aus einem Charm Pack habe ich mir dann noch ein Kissen genäht, diesmal mit etwas mehr grün.
Und mit dieser gemütlichen Kombination habe ich auf einem blauen IKEA Poäng Sessel sitzend auf einem blauen Teppich den halben Winterverbracht und für meine Prüfung gelernt. Jetzt habe ich genug vom blau in der Wohnung, aber zum Picknicken eignet sich der Quillt auch super... Wird sicherlich noch öfter auf dem Kollwitzplatz zum Einsatz kommen.

And from a charm pack I used the green and blue squares to make a matching cushion. And with this combination I spent most of the winter sitting on a blue IKEA chair on a blue rug studying for my exam. Now I can't see blue in my flat anymore, but use the quilt for pick nicks. I have just a little bit of green around the corner where I can spent sunny days.
